iRide.2020.01.01 Just another day
I struggle to be celebratory for hogmanay (the last day of the old year) or New Year's Day. What is there to celebrate? It's a semi-arbitrary point in time on the Gregorian calendar, which was a fudged update in 1582 of the Julian calendar overseen by Ugo Boncompagni aka Pope Gregory XIII. Unlike the equinoxes or the solstices, it lacks any direct planetary significance. If the concept of counting backwards from twelve and then igniting fireworks following a mean value of 365.2425 days has elapsed from the last time you did so is your thing then that's fine by me.
None of the foregoing makes me a curmudgeon. I departed joyfully for a bicycle ride just as I do on days that have no celebrated calendrical significance. The weather was cool and cloudy: however, breaks in the overcast provided fleeting patches of sunlight on the countryside.
