iRide.2020.01.08 Knee rest

In deference to the parlous state of my knees, I rode as gently as possible. Gently on a bicycle equates to slow, but that was quite welcome on a sunny afternoon. There was a cold breeze, but the warm sunshine offset any windchill. It was actually pleasant even riding into the headwind.

Earlier in the day, for the first time in forty years, I traveled by bicycle as an alternative to using a fossil-fueled vehicle. The route was only 1.6 miles each way so there was no appreciable difference in the journey times using either mode of transport. I did this for convenience and was surprised that I got a kick out of doing so.

Many years ago, I commuted a round trip that was about the same distance as the rides I do now for pleasure. Out of necessity back then I used a wrong size, woman specific frame, hub three speed, mass market steel bicycle. Those rides, in all weathers and after midnight on the return journey at the end of my shift, took me forty minutes each way. Like the old Highlander who took a young bride, the extra hour or so it takes me now is time I dinnae grudge.
