How now, brown cow? I checked with the Phrase Finder for the meaning and derivation of this expression. The term Brown Cow has been used in Scotland as a jocular name for a beer barrel. Allan Ramsay, used it in his 'The gentle shepherd, a Scots pastoral comedy' in 1725: "The auld anes think it best / With the brown cow to clear their een." Next time I am in a pretentious bar it is my intention to order a glass of brown cow. I will let you know how that goes for me.
