Virtual exploration of Utah geology
I have been stuck indoors for a couple of days with mild seasonal-allergy symptoms. Thanks to the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) 2020 calendar [link] I was able to do some virtual exploring. Each of the twelve months in the calendar has an attractive photo of a geological feature in Utah taken by a UGS staff member. That's only the beginning: "…you ain't heard nothing yet", as Al Jolson said in the Jazz Singer [link] in 1927—the calendar is the start of a virtual journey [link] through the places it features using an interactive interface controlled by the reader..
Utah has faults, several of them in fact, and the UGS has a webpage [link] with details. Faults usually mean earthquakes, too, and for anyone living in Hurricane, Utah, the detailed sketch map [link] of the Volcano Mountain Faults to the west of the town and the Hurricane Fault Zone to the east should be something to think about in an idle moment.
The physical calendar was out of stock when we visited, but all the calendar photos are embedded in the interactive webpage. This is a very well executed resource, easy to understand and operate, which should delight those with enquiring minds, whatever their age or experience.
